You will never go back microwave popcorn after trying this recipe for the hob. It is made with oil, margarine and salt.

  • 4 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3 tablespoons margarine
  • 100g unpopped popcorn
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste

  1. Start by lining a large serving bowl with kitchen paper, which will absorb excess oil.
  2. In a 2 litre saucepan, combine the oil, margarine and popcorn. Set over high heat, and constantly shake the pan back and forth. After the first kernel of corn pops, place the lid on the pot, and continue shaking. When the popcorn starts to lift the lid up off the pan, remove it from the heat, and hold it over the paper bag until it stops popping.
  3. Pour into the bowl and season with half of the salt. Shake the bowl to distribute the salt. Taste before adding more so you don't make it too salty. You can always add more salt.

Hi, I posted this recipe. I just wanted to let you know the ingredients I use because reviewer "Annie" gave me 1 star because she is having troubles getting it right. I start by buying the best (most expensive) yellow popcorn kernels. Cheaper brands don't pop well. I use Pure Wesson Vegetable Oil and I Can't Believe It's Not Butter to cook them in. Then I top it off with Lawry's Seasoned Salt (remember not to add too much). I hope that helps Annie. When you get it to work I hope you come back and update your review. Soooooo easy and delicious, no need to microwave ever again! But! Note that this popcorn can be made really successfully using the same method but with only 1 T of canola oil and 1 T of margarine (I use Smart Balance), the salt will still stick just fine and the fat is cut down a ton. Believe it or not there is a trick to this for those who are afraid of burning the popcorn. Only add 3 kernels to the oil first and when all 3 pop then add the rest of the unpopped kernels.Make sure you shake well so that it is in motion. We also like to add the butter oil that you can get at the grocery store. Delicious and the paper bag gets rid of the extra oil that usually deposits at the bottom of the bowl. I REFUSE to eat microwave popcorn again. Delicious. Thanks for the post.-19 Jul 2008

Mom’s Microwave Caramel Popcorn

All you need are about 15 minutes, plus a few simple ingredients, a microwave, and a brown paper bag for my Mom’s Microwave Caramel Popcorn!

It’s this time of year, during the holidays, that my craving for caramel popcorn is fiercest. As if there weren’t enough sweets to be had with all the pretty cookie platters and holiday gatherings. But my craving is what it is, and I don’t even try to fight it anymore.

My favorite caramel corn is a recipe from my friend Ann, an oven-baked version that is absolutely phenomenal. But it does require a candy thermometer on the stovetop and some babysitting in the oven, which amounts to stirring the caramel corn every 15 minutes a few different times. And that is where the beauty of my Mom’s Microwave Caramel Popcorn recipe shines. It’s easy peasy. No candy thermometer or oven baking required!

I remember enjoying this sweet treat when we were young, but haven’t had it in so many years. Then, when we were back in South Dakota for corn harvest in October, Mom made a batch of this microwave caramel popcorn one evening. In a very short amount of time, she had a fresh crunchy batch of delicious caramel popcorn set out on the counter. I couldn’t believe how quickly it came together, and then how very delicious it was!

All you need is popped corn and a few simple ingredients for the caramel, a microwave, and a brown paper bag. Give yourself about 15 minutes and you’ll have a pan of caramel popcorn cooling in a pan on the counter, ready to indulge in.

I’m not gonna lie…that oven-baked version from my friend Ann is still #1 in my book. It has a little deeper flavor, a little fuller crunch. But this microwave recipe from Mom is what I’ll be making more often from here on out. It’s just too easy to put together, and is still incredibly delicious. Now I have every reason to enjoy wonderful homemade caramel popcorn whenever the craving hits me, any time of year.

½ tablespoon Carlini Vegetable Oil

1 carrot, peeled and diced

1 tablespoon Happy Harvest Tomato Paste

¼ teaspoon Stonemill Chili Powder

¼ teaspoon Stonemill Ground Cumin

½ teaspoon Stonemill Garlic Powder

½ teaspoon Stonemill Onion Powder

½ teaspoon Stonemill Iodized Table Salt

½ teaspoon Stonemill Ground Black Pepper

½ cup Burman’s Original BBQ Sauce *

½ cup Priano Chunky Marinara Pasta Sauce

19.2 ounces Fit & Active 93% Lean Fresh Ground Turkey

This Buffalo-style hot popcorn recipe keeps all of the flavour of my favourite dip &ndash and my dad&rsquos favourite bag of flavoured nachos &ndash making it the perfect easy snack for enjoying on game night. It&rsquos also a fun & affordable option for entertaining, skipping the expense of chicken or the work of putting together the dip.

Gluten-Free Popcorn “Fried” Chicken

What better way to celebrate Father's Day than with an American classic? Fried chicken and beer <gluten-free in this case>. It's a fabulous combination, loved the world round, plus it's quick and easy to prepare. A perfect Dad meal.

But we're not ones to go out and buy a big ol' bucket of popcorn chicken from the Colonel, to celebrate with Dad. Oh no, it's time to whip up a batch of our very own <and super healthy>, gluten-free fried chicken.

I wish I had a funny, heart-warming story to tell about how fried chicken and my dad go hand-in-hand, but to be honest we aren't a family that ate fried food. We never ate fast food , because my parents knew what it would do to our bodies. They made a decision to raise us on healthy food, teaching us the importance of using natural ingredients, guiding us to be conscientious and smart about our food choices.

At the time my brother and I resented this way of life. We wanted what other kids had in their lunch boxes – white bread with jiff and smuckers, not seedy whole grain bread with teddy peanut butter and organic raspberry jam . But today? I can't thank them enough. They have shaped me into the vegetable loving, health food craving, cooking obsessed, Queen of Quinoa that I am today. My parents are my rock.

To celebrate Father's Day, I've given you a little peak into my dad's world, my family and what makes him smile.

My dad is an outdoors man through and through. He loves spending time in nature, surrounded by trees, animals and birds. He's an Ornithologist <he studies birds – specifically the Bicknell's Thrush> and always has binoculars around his neck. He has taught me to appreciate the environment, to be thankful for the beauty around us and that we all need to do our part to protect Mother Nature .

So now you must be wondering, how does this story, or me telling you about my dad, tie into fried chicken? I mean come on, he studies birds and here I am talking about cooking one <don't worry we're not vegetarian at home>.

Really, this recipe reminds me of him because it would be the perfect picnic dinner . One of the things I love about going home in the summer is eating outside with my parents on our deck, with a fire blazing in our outdoor fire pit. This meal is easy to make, doesn't require many ingredients, is healthy and not even fried at all. In fact, I'll let you in on a little secret: it's baked!

Funyun Popcorn

We love to eat popcorn in my house. In fact, we’re at my Mom & Dad’s house on our way up to Oregon and my Mom popped a HUGE batch of popcorn for us to snack on in the car as we drive up. Microwave popcorn is pretty good with all the different flavors and things but for the cost you don’t get as much as you do when you pop your own. I also like when we can get away from all the butter. When you pop your own you can come up with a lot of really great flavors. This came about when I was looking in my spice cabinet for something different to do and grabbed my go to spices, garlic and onion powders. Once I tried it I realized I had stumbled onto Funyun popcorn. I was so excited and so was my husband. We love Funyuns! They’re the crispy fried onion rings you find in the chips section at the store.

This is the simplest after school snack or movie night treat you could make and definitely better than anything to come out of your microwave! What’s your quick after school snack?

Recipe Summary

  • ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut
  • ¾ cup almonds, chopped
  • 8 cups plain popped popcorn
  • 2 cups rolled oats (do not use instant)
  • ½ cup raisins
  • ½ cup thinly sliced dried apricots
  • ¾ cup honey
  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350ºF. Spread coconut on an ungreased baking sheet and bake until lightly toasted, stirring once or twice, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a bowl to cool. Wipe off baking sheet and spread almonds on it. Bake until golden brown and fragrant, 5 to 7 minutes, stirring once or twice. Transfer to bowl with coconut to cool.

Mist a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray. In a large bowl, combine popcorn, oats, coconut, almonds, raisins and apricots stir well.

In a small pan over low heat, combine honey, brown sugar and salt. Cook, stirring, until sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Pour honey mixture over popcorn mixture stir until all ingredients are well-coated and there are no dry spots. Transfer mixture to baking dish. Using lightly moistened palms, firmly press mixture into baking dish. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before cutting into bars.

DON’T EXPECT THE WORLD to think you’re wonderful just because you do something ‘good’ – for someone else! Good people do good things all of the time – everyday, and no one [gives] them [a pat] on the back for it. You have to do good – not for what others are going to think of you, but what you’re going to think of yourself!

If you get a kick out of doing something good for somebody… do it! But don’t expect any rewards or special recognition for having gone out of your way. Every once in a while you may be complimented for something good that you’ve done, and that’s very nice.

But most of the time, whatever you do is to make yourself feel better about what has to be done, or what should be done! It’s not a matter of conscience, but of compassion. Either you have it, or you don’t!

  • 150g/5½oz popcorn kernels
  • 1 tsp instant coffee granules
  • 1 tsp caster sugar (or any other type of fine sugar including icing sugar or soft light brown sugar)
  • 1 tsp drinking chocolate powder
  • 2 sprays of spray oil, or 1 tsp regular oil

Pop the corn according to the packet instructions and put into a mixing bowl.

Put the coffee, sugar and chocolate powder into a blender and blitz until a fine powder. Alternatively grind in a pestle and mortar or place in a small food bag and crush using a rolling pin.

Spray the oil onto the popcorn and mix to coat lightly. Sprinkle with the coffee mixture.

Recipe Tips

The coffee granules can be removed if preferred, and the other flavourings simply stirred together.

Buy the ready popped popcorn if that’s easier for you, but popping your own is much cheaper.
