    To make the cookies: Preheat oven to 375°F. Mix together sugar cookie mix, flour, butter, egg, and food coloring.

    Portion out 45 (2-teaspoon) size scoops of dough and roll into balls. Place about an inch apart on a baking sheet and flatten slightly into 1-inch circles.

    Bake for 8-11 minutes until the cookies look dry on top. Cool completely.

    For the decorations: Insert a long toothpick or thin skewer into one round end of each marshmallow to make decorating easier. Pipe about 10 vertical stripes around one marshmallow using red cookie icing. Immediately brush the icing into a thicker and flatter stripe using a (food use only) paintbrush.

    Pipe red icing in a circle on top of the marshmallow.

    Poke the toothpick into a large block of Styrofoam™ and allow the red icing stripes to dry.

    Repeat with remaining marshmallows.

    Pipe a blue stripe around the bottom edge of each marshmallow. Brush it into a wider, thinner, stripe, using a paintbrush, if desired.

    Immediately attach white star sprinkles around the blue icing band, placing one at each intersection of the blue stripe and red stripe. Allow to dry completely.

    Assemble cookie hats: Pipe a circle of red icing over top of each cookie and immediately set a decorated marshmallow in the center of each.

    Allow cookies to dry completely before serving.

Patriotic Marshmallow Hats

Uncle Sam wants YOU and your Patriotic Marshmallow Hats! …to make his cute little hats. Just grab some Jet-Puffed marshmallows, Ritz crackers and fruit roll ups.

For your Patriotic Marshmallow Hats you will need:

*Red food coloring mist – optional

1. You can cut a circle out of the red fruit roll up to fit over the Ritz cracker or simply spray the cracker using red food coloring mist.

2. Then cut stripes out of the red fruit roll up and attach to the marshmallow using melted white chocolate.

3. Cut a circle of red fruit roll up and place on top of marshmallow.

4. Next cut a strip of of blue fruit roll up and wrap around the bottom of the marshmallow.

5. Attach white star sprinkles around the blue stripe with a toothpick dipped melted white chocolate.

Mmmmm, stars and stripes never tasted so good, love the combo of sweet and salty!

How to Make an Uncle Sam Hat Cake

Everyone's seen a flag cake &mdash but this impressive and inspiring dessert is next-level. Change up your typical patriotic buffet centerpiece with a unique twist: a fondant layer cake!

Difficulty: Intermediate
Total Time: 2 hours, plus overnight in the freezer

What You'll Need

&bull any favorite cake recipe
&bull 3 16- oz packages of powdered sugar, plus extra for the counter
&bull 2 packages of marshmallows
&bull 1 teaspoon water
&bull microwave-safe bowl
&bull air-tight containers
&bull blue and red food coloring
&bull small-sized star cookie cutter
&bull rolling pin
&bull frosting of choice
&bull serrated knife
&bull plate for decorating
&bull plate for display
&bull pizza cutter or scissors

How to Make the Fondant

STEP 1: Place 5 bags of marshmallows with 1 tablespoon of water into a microwave-safe bowl at 45-second intervals. Continue heating until all the marshmallows are melted.

STEP 2: Start by adding 3/4 of one package of powdered sugar and massage mixture with hands until powdered sugar is completely mixed in. Continue to add more powdered sugar, about 1 to 1 1/2 cups at a time as needed until the mixture no longer sticks to hands or the bowl.

STEP 3: Place the fondant in an airtight bag and then into a plastic container to prevent it from cracking. Keep at room temperature.

How to Make the Cake

STEP 1: Bake any a box cake or your favorite cake recipe in two 9" pans and one 8" pan. Red velvet gives a festive surprise when you slice into the cake!

STEP 2: After the cakes have cooled, level them by using a serrated knife &mdash cut off the tops to make them nice and even.

STEP 3: Wrap cakes in plastic wrap and place in the freezer overnight, or for at least 2 hours if you're short on time.

STEP 4: Remove cakes from the freezer and take off the plastic wrap.

STEP 5: Put a dab of icing of your choice on the middle of your plate that is being used to decorate the cake. This will anchor the cake in place.

STEP 6: Place the 8" cake on the bottom, frost its top, and place the 9" cake on top. Repeat with the next 9" cake.

STEP 7: The cake should look a bit like an inverted triangle. To create the top hat shape and magnify the triangle, reach for the serrated knife to gently trim down the sides of the cake by slanting the knife inward toward the cake. This can be tricky! Be sure not to trim too much, just enough to show the decreasing width from top to bottom.

STEP 8: Using the same frosting, do a crumb coat of the cake. This is just a thin layer of frosting all around the cake so that the fondant will stick and prevent any crumbs from peeking through.

STEP 9: Place the cake back in the freezer to allow frosting to stiffen &ndash about 20 minutes should do the trick. After the 20 minutes, remove the cake from the freezer.

STEP 10: Dye two handfuls of fondant red using red food coloring. Add 3 drops of the food coloring to the fondant and knead with your hands until the color is fully incorporated (wear gloves to keep your hands from becoming discolored). For a darker and more vibrant hue, continue to add the food coloring 2 to 3 drops at a time as needed. Roll out the red fondant and cut into a circle that's bigger than the 9" pan but no larger than the cake plate being used. Place a dab of frosting on the cake plate and place the red circle onto the cake plate or stand. This is the lip of the hat. Roll out the fondant again and cut another circle that can be placed on top of the 9" cake. Set this circle aside.

STEP 11: Take the cake from the decorating plate and place it in the center of the cake plant on top of the red circle.

STEP 12: Using a rolling pin, roll out the white fondant on a surface covered in powdered sugar to prevent sticking and pulling. The fondant should be double the size of the cake so there's enough to play with in our next step!

STEP 13: After the fondant is rolled to about 1/8" thick, lay the rolling pin on the fondant side farthest from you. Flip the fondant over onto the pin and roll toward you until it is all on the pin.

STEP 14: Place the edge of the fondant at the bottom corner of the cake and unroll the fondant over the cake. Cut off any excess pieces using scissors or a pizza cutter.

STEP 15: This next step requires some fast moving. Quickly stretch and rub down the fondant so that it covers all sides smoothly. Start with the top, move down to one side, and then continue to work around the cake.

STEP 16: Roll out the red fondant into strips about 1/2" wide to create the stripes on the cake sides. Again, remove any excess using scissors. (Note that if the fondant is ever having trouble sticking to the cake, a dab of water can be applied to the back to act as glue.)

STEP 17: Take the previously cut red circle and place on top of the cake.

STEP 18: Dye one handful of fondant blue. Roll out the fondant long enough to fit the circumference of the bottom layer of the cake. This should be about 3/4-to-1" wide. Place the blue band around the bottom layer of the cake.

STEP 19: Roll out the white fondant once more and cut enough stars using a small cookie cutter to be placed around the cake, about 8 to 15.

This St. Patrick's Day no-sew craft is just for fun, but totally over the top! After we made a shamrock shirt for our dolls, we couldn’t resist a festive St. Patrick’s Day hat to finish the look. This one is easy and cute to make, and goes on as a headband!

• Green, black, and tan or gold colored cardstock
• Scrap of green felt
• A compass for drawing circles
• Ruler
• Various glues (I ended up only using Elmer’s glue and hot glue)
• Scissors
• Gold glitter
• Elastic (or optional hairpins)
• Gold or silver metallic pipe cleaners (optional)

Ok, let's get started.

Step 1: Our first step is to draw some shapes on our green cardstock. I drew one circle that is 3 inches in diameter, another circle 2 inches in diameter with another circle 1.5 inches in diameter inside of it, and a strip along the side that is 2 3/4 inches wide with another line drawn at 2.5 inches. Cut out the 3 inch circle, the 2 inch outer circle, and the strip of cardstock at the 2.5 inch line mark. Take the time now to also cut out a 2 inch circle of the green felt, using your cardstock piece as a template to cut it out. Set this aside for later. Then cut the long strip of cardstock to be 5.5 inches long.

Step 2: Using the smaller, interior circle as a guide, make little cuts about 1/4 inch apart all the way around your 2 inch circle, stopping at the inner circle. Do the same on your strip of cardstock, making little cuts stopping at the 2.5 inch line. Fold all your little cuts into the circle and up on the cardstock strip.

Step 3: Using hot glue and working quickly, glue the folded edge of the circle to the very top of the 5.5 inch strip of cardstock, along the uncut edge. I did this small sections at a time, ending with putting glue along the short edge of the cardstock strip and gluing the top part of the hat closed, making the crown and top of the hat.

Step 4: Using the gold or tan cardstock, measure out a square that is 1 1/4 inches tall and wide, and draw lines 1/4 inside those lines, making a 1 inch square within the 1 ¼ inch square. Cut on the outer lines. Now cut out the center square made by the 1/4 inch markings. I did this by folding the square in half one way and cutting two sides, then folding the other way and cutting the remaining two sides.

Step 5: Using your Elmer’s glue, apply an even layer of gold glitter, and set aside to dry. Cut a strip from the black cardstock that is ¾ of an inch wide by 5.5 inches. Once the glue under the glitter is dry, glue the gold “buckle” right at the center on the black strip of cardstock, making sure the buckle sticks out evenly at the top and bottom.

Step 6 (optional): I thought it would be fun to have a sparkly shamrock stick out of the hat band, so I bent a metallic pipe cleaner into a shamrock shape. If you think about it, it is just a stem with three hearts coming out of it. :-) Using the hot glue, glue the hat band to the crown of the hat, just above the brim, and stick your pipe cleaner shamrock in there as you go, so there will be room for it.

Step 7: Cut a piece of elastic 13 inches long. Make a 1 inch overlap in the ends and sew it closed. Conversely, you could tie a knot in your elastic, leaving a 12 inch circumference circle. Lay your elastic on the center bottom of the hat, keeping in mind which way the front of the hat faces. The elastic should go from side to side in relation to the front of the hat. Using your hot glue again, apply glue in a circle shape, but avoid getting it on the elastic.

Step 8: Lay the circle of felt you cut out earlier over the glue, and press together completely and firmly while it cools a bit. *If you’d rather use hair pins, omit the elastic and cut little slits in the felt to slip the pins through before you glue the felt circle to the bottom of the hat.

Ta-da!! Now your hat is done!! Once all the hot glue has completely cooled and hardened, put it on your doll and try it out set to one side - wow, she looks so stylish!
