James Hotels offers private bars for New Years’ parties

Wikimedia Commons/ Nightscream

Macy's Fireworks in New York

Live in New York or Chicago, looking for something to do New Year’s Eve, and have at least 90 friends and a wheelbarrow-full of cash? Then you might just be the right person to take over The James Hotels’ bar and lounges in their New York and Chicago locations, now for sale on eBay.

In New York, $25,000 will get you full access to the SoHo hotel’s penthouse lounge, JIMMY, with cocktails, a DJ, a champagne toast at midnight, appetizers from chef David Burke, and 360-degree views of Manhattan thrown in. The bidding war is raging (well actually, there are no bids as of press time), and if you bring 99 friends that means that access to your party will only cost them about $250 each.

Over in Chicago the situation is the same, except for the fact that the price has been chopped to $10,000. Up to 97 people can take over the JBar in that city’s James Hotel, and they’ll get the same deal. When you do the math, $100 per head is actually a pretty good deal when compared with other prix-fixe New Year’s Eve "parties" around town.

And it’s not all for show, either: The hotel chain will be donating 10 percent of proceeds to Hurricane Sandy relief.

Prospect Park Sour (Flatiron Lounge, New York, NY)

Maple syrup coincides with multiple citrus flavors in this cocktail at Manhattan’s Flatiron Lounge. On the spirits side, drinkers will detect both rye whiskey and Amaro. All of which begs the question: Are some spirits particularly well-suited to being mixed with maple syrup? 𠇋ourbon or rye are the obvious choices, but really any spirit can go well with it,” said the bar’s general manager, Ezekial Miller. “It just depends on the direction of the cocktail and the flavors you’re trying to achieve."

Maple-Walnut Sazerac (Saxon + Parole, New York, NY)

Rye also plays a role in this cocktail at the New York restaurant Saxon + Parole, alongside cognac and the walnut liqueur Nocello. Walnuts are something of a theme here, as toasted walnuts also play a part in the drink, blending with the maple syrup and infusing the whole thing with a nice hint of autumn—if autumn itself could get you lightly buzzed.

Pay Your Rent and Other Payments With Citi PayAll

Given a choice, I would pay every dime (or fils) with my credit cards. Not because I am in need of ‘credit’. But because I love earning reward points, miles and cashback. The two posts below provide a good indication of my credit card strategy.

However, some of our biggest expenses cannot be paid using a credit card. Rent is a prime example. Some schools do not accept credit cards as well. Other examples include salaries to domestic staff, government payments etc. I have always wondered if I could earn credit card reward points on these payments.

Introducing Citi PayAll

Citi PayAll was launched in UAE in September. Earlier, it also had a trial run in South Asia. If you hold a Citi credit card, check your SMS / E-mails.

  • You could schedule a payment to a third-party bank account using your credit card
  • Reason for payments needs to be provided and will be verified – Rent, School fees etc.
  • It will take up to 7 working days for the transfer to be completed
  • A processing fee will be charged (in my experience it was 2% but may vary)
  • You will be provided reward points as per your usual earnings

A processing fee of 2% may seem high to you. However, I believe it gets easily compensated with the reward points on offer.

Let us assume I used Citi PayAll to pay a rent of AED 10,000 ($2,722) with my Citi Prestige credit card. I got charged a processing fee of AED 200 ($54). I also received 5,444 ThankYou points (2 points per US$).

I value my ThankYou points at a minimum of 1.5 cents. This is because I could transfer it to several airline partners including Etihad Guest, Singapore KrisFlyer and Turkish Miles&Smiles. If you are not keen on doing that, you could simply use your points on the Citi Rewards portal for a 1 cent each. I plan to write a separate post with details on how to use your Citi ThankYou points.

As you can see above, you can use your ThankYou points on Citi Rewards Portal for flight / hotel bookings. In this example, you get a value of AED 2,333.64 for 65,368 points. This is roughly 1 cent per point.

At 1.5 cents per ThankYou, I got a 3% cashback. At 1 cent per ThankYou point I got a 2% cashback. This should offset the processing fee.

Your credit card will be charged and the amount will be due as per your statement cycle. In other words, if your credit card is charged on the 5th and if your statement date is 15th and due date is 30th, you need to pay your credit card bill on or before 30th. Therefore, using Citi PayAll may help to manage your cash flows as well.

Final Thoughts

It is a one-of-a-kind feature in UAE. I hope other banks follow suit and introduce such interesting features. I have used Citi PayAll and it works seamlessly. This has made my favorite credit card (Citi Prestige) even better.

A word of advice here. Please do not use this feature to make payments you cannot cover by your statement due date. It is a recipe for disaster.

New Years Eve In Maui 2019

Why not ring in the New Year while dining and dancing the night away – Maui style? And, here’s the great news – you can do it by land or sea, with kids or without! Wine and dine in gourmet fashion by taking a fabulous evening ocean cruise, attending a special holiday luau or other celebration event catered by one of our many fine dining establishments in Maui. Then once 2018 has arrived, why not do some cool and unusual things to make truly unforgettable memories of your once-in-a-lifetime Maui vacation?

By Land

Ritz Carlton Kapalua isn’t just known for it’s luxurious hotel. They have a reputation for throwing an incredible party, but this year they are featuring an impressive number of events for New Years Eve.

Whether you want to celebrate with or without the keiki (kids), they have an event perfect for you. This year they are offering a Chef Interactive Party (yum!), Alaloa Lounge New Years Eve Celebration, New Year’s Eve Dinner at The Banyan and a New Year’s Countdown Celebration for the kids! From fine dining to face painting, they’re offering lots to do this year for the whole family! Kids are able to be picked up as late as 1am, giving time for Mom and Dad to ring in the New Year and enjoy a gourmet 4 course dinner and midnight celebration – all at the same resort. Bringing in 2019 at the Ritz is a luxurious, mind blowing experience for all ages!

Want fun that’s more affordable? Well, look no further because there is something for everyone!

There’s fun to be had in every price range. Fun is on the menu and if you like to dance and dine in style they’ve got the NYE parties for you. Have fun without breaking your budget while you move to the hottest dance mixes. Check out our map above for a party in your area. Come and make your start to 2019 simply unforgettable on Maui!

By Sea

This year there are several ocean charter companies in Maui which are offering some exciting New Years Eve packages whether you’re single or have a special someone. Pride of Maui has a full menu of delectable food, sensationally sinful desserts and of course, an open bar – all at a pretty reasonable price. We must admit, it’s hard to beat floating along the coastline while dancing and dining under the stars as you welcome 2017!

You can also sail into the New Year on the Alii Nui. Their special cruise down the South coast of Maui includes an incredible dinner and views of the fireworks off the Wailea coastline, far away from the crowds.

More Cool Things To Do On New Years

Wanna see fireworks up close? It’s a Maui tradition on the south side of the island, courtesy of the Grand Wailea hotel.

A large barge creates a colorful, sparkling spectacle in the sky for all to enjoy. Get there early and get a good spot. It draws a large crowd every year to all of the beaches nearby but it’s totally worth it!

Why not take a Road to Hana tour? Eco-friendly, culturally educational and conservation minded, it’s an amazing day in Hana and beyond. VIE’s Road to Hana tour is a fantastic way to celebrate being on Maui during the holidays, or anytime for that matter. Gift Certificates are available too! What a great present for friends, family and business associates. Take a little time out of your hectic holiday schedule to see one of the most beautiful places on earth… the legendary Road to Hana!

Why not start the New Year with a beautiful introduction to Hawaiian voyaging culture? There are few things more special that you could experience in Maui than being out on the water in Honolua Bay on New Year’s Day in an outrigger canoe with an expert guide.

You will see an array of wildlife, and maybe even get up close with some of the sea’s largest, most amazing and beautiful creatures, as you paddle like the Hawaiians did centuries ago and still do today? Outrigger canoeing is a big part of Hawaiian cultural history that you can experience hands-on!

If you’re a surf enthusiast (and you’re lucky enough to be there when a large swell is offshore), then watching the pros conquer the big surf at Jaws is primo anytime, but especially during the holidays. Make sure you’re wearing good hiking shoes… it’s not paved and it can get really muddy if the weather isn’t cooperating. (And, FYI there are NO facilities.)

Any time of year is a great time to be in Maui but it’s always wonderful to start your year in this beautiful place. The winter waves, warm waters, the whales breaching off shore and the friendly people make this a top notch place to enjoy the beginning of a new year!

Carpet or laminate?

My carpet is 2 years old. It is a plain beige colour and i really wish we had just gone for wood when we moved in instead of carpet. My carpet has a few stains and because it is plain it needs hoovered like twice a day because you can see every bit of dirt/fluff etc

When we get some money together we will be getting wood flooring with a rug!

Carpet picnic for ⟚te night' at home

How do I get melted wax crayon out of the carpet?!

Help! St. Tropez or Fake Bake or other??

Im carpet all the way, if I had laminate I would only throw a huge rug down anyway so I vote carpet - well, someone had to! lol

We have carpet in the lounge, it was here when we moved in, but its chocolate brown and OMG it shows every single bit of fluff, crumbs and dust - I could probably hoover it 3 times a day if I wanted to. I can't wait till we redecorate and can put laminate down instead!!

We've got laminate in the hall and playroom.

DFS Finance- accepted or not?

Laminate and a rug if needed.

We have laminate in living room, hall upstairs and playroom as it's easier to clean and only in the bedrooms we have carpet. We put the carpets in when we moved here 4 years ago and they look horrible now.

When we have our own house, the whole house will be wooden flooring and rugs no carpet anywhere as it holds dust, not easy to clean and they only look nice in the first year.

I might end up being in minority but I think carpets collect too much dust and dirt to be used downstairs. Fair enough in bedrooms where you only go at night, there is not much traffic or dust from outside etc.
So my vote goes to laminates.

if you hoover daily and make everyone take shoes of at the door they stay nice.:vacuum: Laminate can be a bit cold ,slippery if you have socks on and a lot harder if little ones fall on it.

Have a rug if you want it a bit softer - rugs can be clean so much easier than carpet and you can change you decor easier too! One stain can ruin a carpet or rug but the rug is cheaper and easier to replace. Soo much better for potty training as well!

HEATING! On high for short bursts or on low constantly?

18 month old ice skating good or bad idea?

Snog, Marry or Avoid celebrity style.

if you hoover daily and make everyone take shoes of at the door they stay nice.:vacuum: Laminate can be a bit cold ,slippery if you have socks on and a lot harder if little ones fall on it.

I have to dissagree. Noone wears shoes in my house but as soon as you open the front door, you get loads of dust flying in. The kids run around downstairs a lot more, there is generally a lot more traffic and carpets tend to suck the dust in that no hoover can get out.
Laminates are only cold if you buy cheap ones.

Festive Cocktails at Vu’s Sky Bar and Lounge – Sapphire Road and Sinigang Sling

Have $10,000? Rent Out a Lounge for New Year’s! - Recipes

Patronage to Pat O’Brien’s is unwavering, and no where is that more obvious than the Main Bar. This bar exudes the atmosphere of a neighborhood bar. On the walls hang framed pictures of loyal customers enjoying years spent at their favorite French Quarter establishment. Renovated in the 1960s, the Main Bar caters to local and out-of-town patrons alike.

With over 500 beer steins hanging from the ceiling, champagne bottle wall lamps, and mirrored bar backs bordered with ornate ironwork, the Main Bar has the feel of an old-fashioned private gentlemen’s club – but everyone is welcome here!

The jukebox plays a wide variety of everyone’s favorite bar tunes for those who want to sit back and relax or have a rousing good time dancing with friends. During the day, a giant-screen television broadcasts sporting events, and there’s not a bad seat in the house!

PATIO

As you walk through the carriageway, you follow the slate flooring to Pat O’Brien’s most popular bar – the Patio Bar. The appeal of this famous Patio is evident with its open air to the New Orleans sky and glass and iron tables set among lush foliage. It exudes the feeling of a casual party held in a neighbor’s backyard.

The 4,000 square foot Patio imparts Southern Living at its best. At the center stands Pat O’Brien’s landmark Flaming Fountain. Designed to resemble a champagne glass, the copper fountain hosts a brilliant flame amid streams of water. The rush of the water serves as gentle background music to the sounds of laughter and chatter of customers, while the fire provides a warm glow to light the night sky.

The Patio hosts two bars serving customers – one serves Hurricanes and beer, while the other offers our full menu of Specialty Drinks. While sipping your Hurricane, you can stop by our Gift Shop to pick from our wide variety of Pat O’Brien’s souvenirs.

The Patio’s atmosphere exudes the Pat O’Brien’s motto of “Have Fun!” Whether you gather with friends to drink a Hurricane or two, or have a seat next to the Flaming Fountain to enjoy the night air, the Patio serves up the fun as only Pat O’Brien’s can!!

PIANO LOUNGE

“Dueling pianos” concept evolved from the late 1890’s RAGTIME era, where two pianists would “duel” for the crowds attention and tips. Although there were two pianists at the original location, the new location provided much more space to accommodate two baby grand pianos. They tweaked the ragtime format to encourage audience participation by way of song requests. The show quickly became a favorite of locals, especially a few newspaper writers. Word spread across the country and propelled the bar’s already familiar name. Through the years a variety of performers have graced the stage…singers, horn players and, of course, tray tapping, but always with the accompaniment of talented entertainers at the copper topped pianos.

The show is largely dictated by the audience. The lounge is filled with fun energy to the delight of anyone who walks in the room. Often, there is a line to get in , but it’s well worth it. It’s a must do in New Orleans!

Shows typically are Monday-Thursday 6:00 pm – close and Friday, Saturday, Sunday 2:00 pm – close . The Piano Lounge is closed at this time. We hope to resume shows soon.
