It started as a joke, but for one night only, David Chang’s Ruth Krishna’s Steakhouse will become a reality

Indian rib-eye: It’s good to know that David Chang has a sense of humor.

When David Chang published a tongue-in-cheek article about an Indian steakhouse in this month’s Lucky Peach, it was supposed to be a joke. But now, Chang will turn the fictitious Ruth Krishna’s Steakhouse, which he describes as “an exciting new concept from chef Akhtar Nawab [executive chef at La Esquina] and one of America's next best restaurants,” into a real-life pop-up restaurant.

For one night only, on September 17, chef David Chang and chef Nawab will take over a former Italian restaurant space on Avenue B in the East Village to bring Chang’s satirical menu to vibrant, edible life. The tasting menu will include biryani onion rings with green mango ketchup, tandoori ribeye made with 21-day dry-aged beef, creamed saag, aloo bhaji hash browns, and mango lassi, among other Indian/steakhouse mashups.

Unfortunately, tickets are not yet available, but we imagine that with a name like Chang and the exclusivity of a one-night popup, reservations will be hard to come by.
